Wedding Shower Etiquette

By March 9, 2015December 18th, 2023No Comments

Dear Diane,

My daughter is having a small, private wedding with only a few friends and family members invited. She would like to have a shower to celebrate her wedding with all of her friends. Is it okay to invite guests to a shower that aren’t on the wedding guest list?

K.B.

Dear K.B.,

The short answer is no. Your daughter’s intentions may be sincere, but it will come off as an opportunity to collect wedding gifts. If you daughter wants to celebrate her wedding with friends that are not invited to the wedding, I suggest the bride (or bride and groom) have a “celebration” as opposed to a “shower” at some point after the wedding has taken place.

Best,

Diane
