Six months ago, I agreed to attend a family reunion my sister is planning. When she asked me to participate, I had no other conflicting engagements. However, our office retreat has recently been scheduled at the same time. Not only is it important to attend from a professional standpoint, but it is an all expense paid trip to the Bahamas. Is it acceptable to forego the reunion given the circumstances? Or should I honor my original commitment?

Occasionally, after we agree to attend a particular event, something unexpected comes up. Whenever possible, you want to honor your word. In this instance, you have a valid excuse. A work retreat is a good reason to alter plans. The Bahamas is an added perk! Explain the situation to your sister. Say something like, “I know I agreed to take part in this year’s reunion, but my company retreat has been scheduled for the same week. I have a professional commitment to join them. It is also a rare opportunity to travel to a place I have never been. I am sorry I am going to have to miss the family reunion.” Your sister will most likely understand, and you do have a reasonable case. Make it a point to follow up with relatives you were looking forward to seeing.
